Magazine Adverts for Kings of Leon

Only By The Night - Kings of Leon (2008)

Colour: The magazine advert puts the front cover of the album Only By The Night which is being advertised here. The colour is a night vision type of green that is dominating the picture. This connotes the night time which again links to the album Only By The Night, which is also in a green night vision like colour font, this links to the owl in the picture as an owl is connoted with the night time and is hard to see without night vision. The rest of the text is in white and the most important bit of text which says 'Out Now' is in red which doesn't link to the rest of the colour scheme.

Costume: The costume of the characters is that four faces of the band have been cut to a 1/4 each to create a face with an owl in the centre. If looked at closely, they are wearing a leather jacket and a white shirt, again keeping to their style and appearance.

Brand Identity: Kings of Leon are an indie rock band that do things very differently to other big hit bands. They always stay true to themselves and where they came from, this links into the magazine advertisement well because

Layout & Positioning: The band name 'Kings of Leon' is high at the top in big capitals, this stands out well as the white really shows up well over the night vision green. The album cover picture is in the centre which really stands out well, the album name is dead underneath in a different colour text to the artist name. Underneath that in a smaller font size we see the songs featured and underneath that in big capitals it says 'Out Now' which really stands out to grab the attention as its in a different colour font. We see the company name who are sponsoring the advertisement at the bottom left of the layout which is Play.com, the website name for the band is also at the bottom of the advertisement, again trying to get as much down as they possibly can to be successful.

Shot choice: The shot choice is a close up shot of the characters which connotes emotion and a togetherness of the band, that they role together Only By The Night, again linking to the album name. The shot is also a close up because it connotes a chaotic image with all the faces being mixed together.

Framing: The shot is very chaotic and confusing, it cuts five different images into the same picture and links them all well but it is very confusing and chaotic look at, this links and connotes to the mysteriousness of night time that is connoted by the album name Only By The Night.

Lighting: The lighting is quite dim but its light enough due to the night vision green that is over the image of the band.

Location: The location of the shot looks as if its in a studio but it is extremely hard to tell, for that it gives us a mysterious mindset on the band, again connoting night time which is linked to mysteriousness and isolation.

Font choice: The font style stays the same throughout the advertisement, this is very good due to it being very consistent. All the text is in capitals to grab the attention of the readers and to show that the album is something to shout about. The font colours are different but I think thats good because it would look too plain and boring without the mixture of colours. We see white, a mysterious green and a red used throughout the advertisement, these three colours connote different things, white is just plain and is easy to look at, the green links very well to the album name and the album image, and the red stands out well to grab the attention of the reader.

Language choices: The language used is very basic and plain "Kings of Leon, Only By The Night, the new album includes Sex on Fire, Crawl and Use Somebody, Out Now, Play.com, www.kingsofleon.com. There is no waffle, the advertisement gets across its point quickly and strongly, it all stands out very well and doesn't bore the reader. In my opinion it is the perfect way to advertise. The quick and powerful terms such as OUT NOW stand out very well and grab the attention, it doesn't force the reader to buy it but it alerts them that this album is now out in stores, and this links well to the Play.com advertisement who are sponsoring the advert in the bottom left of the page.

Come Around Sundown - Kings of Leon (2010)

Colour: The colour is like a golden sunset coast, it connotes the end of a day and the beginning of the night. The colours used in this are very peaceful and relaxing, the music throughout the album also connotes this, it is very calm. The colours are distorted and look very blurry but again this connotes a calmness and peacefulness as if the eye of the reader is half open. The colours although very bright are dark in some places, there is a nice variety throughout the advertisement for Come Around Sundown.

Brand Identity: It follows similar patterns from the previous advertisement in terms of keeping a consistent brand identity in terms of the layout/design and the font and colour scheme. It keeps a consistent pattern as this can be seen on many Kings of Leon advertisments and posters.

Layout & Positioning: Just like the previous Kings of Leon advert I reviewed, the artist name is at the top of the advertisement, with the image taking centre scale and really showing off. The album name Come Around Sundown is near the bottom but it is also in a smaller font to the artist name, maybe showing that the brand name is more important than the album they are releasing. Underneath that is the date of release for the album along with it saying 'The New Album' this grabs the attention of the reader due to it saying new people will want to see a new album. Again just like the previous album, play.com is in the bottom left corner along with the artist website at the central bottom.

Shot choice: This magazine cover has a long shot/establishing shot of a palm tree looking through a blurred and distorted sky. It looks very calm and relaxed which connotes the music that is heard through the album. The music is very peaceful and relaxed, magazine advert links to this with its peaceful view almost holiday like.

Framing: The framing of the shot is distorted and blurry, there is more colour in the picture than an actual object or person to concentrate on, its very peaceful as its very plain, mixed with the sunset colours like orange, yellow and red.

Lighting: The lighting is very contrasted throughout the magazine poster, it is very dark at the top and the bottom of the poster where all the text is. The rest of the poster is very bright with orange, yellow and red colours all blended in to it.

Location: The location of the shot looks like it has been taken somewhere very hot and with sun, my interpretation is that it has been taken in the Caribbean or in a southern state in America such as Texas, Florida or even Los Angeles.

Font choice:  The font is very old fashioned and is connoted with 70s and 80s text font that would be found on popular albums. The font is very Americana like and looks very relaxed, hippy like. Kings of Leon can be linked to this peacefulness and calmness due to them being religious and being very peaceful people, the poster suits there style a lot especially the font choice and font colour which is a creamy white, again connoted with peace and relaxation.

Language choices: Again just like Only By The Night the language choice is very basic and short, the band name leads the headline of the poster, then the main attraction which is the image with the album name underneath which is Come Around Sundown, for me this connotes that they come alive at night and the poster is the sunset and the calmness before the storm. Underneath that it says the new album out October 18th which does differ to the Only By The Night poster because that says out now rather than out on a certain date, this means that this poster is a promotional one to raise awareness of the release date rather than the fact that it could be out no.

 Mechanical Bull (2013)

Colour: There is a dark background which symbolises the night time but it also allows and complements bright colours to be portrayed over it, as we see here with the Mechanical Bull sign which looks just like something you would see in Las Vegas outside a bar, restaurant or shop. The colours are very bright and stand out very well, the brightness used with yellow, blue and red all mixes in well to create a very visible sign and a very visible advertisement for the band.

Brand Identity: It follows similar patterns from the previous advertisement in terms of keeping a consistent brand identity in terms of the layout/design and the font and colour scheme. It keeps a consistent pattern as this can be seen on many Kings of Leon advertisements and posters.

Layout & Positioning: Again just like the previous two magazine advertisements we have seen, this one has a very similar layout, the band name is at the top as it has been in the other two with the main feature being in the centre, in this case the album name Mechanical Bull which they are advertising. At the bottom is a lot more written information that there was on the previous two advertisements. On this advertisement we see all the information of the new album such as availability, songs included and concert advertisements.

Shot choice: This shot looks like a medium close up or a long shot of the Mechanical Bull sign, taking from a distance long enough to feature the whole sign in it and allowing there to be space throughout the image for information to be inserted.

Framing: The sign of Mechanical Bull is centred in the middle to create the effect of importance, it's the most important visual on the advertisement and its what should be seen first.

Lighting: Obviously the background is black so that is very dark but it allows the other colours to really stand out on the poster, for instance the text which is a much brighter cream and red really shows well and it's as if the Mechanical Bull sign is lighting up the text.

Location: The location of the Mechanical Bull sign has to be outside a bar or club, which is maybe called the Mechanical Bull, this connotes a more southern American feel which is where Kings of Leon are from so it links to this very well.

Font choice: The font is very consistent and again is in capitals to really stand out over the black background. The font colours are a creamy white and red, again these colours were used throughout the previous two advertisements, this seems to be a very common trend with Kings of Leon advertisements, they keep a very nice consistency with their fonts throughout them all.

Language choices: Again just like the previous two Kings of Leon advertisements, the language choice is very short and sweet, it gets to the point. Words such as 'Available now', 'The new album', 'Including.. Beautiful War, etc' this cleverly alerts the reader all the key information they need to know without having to look at it for a long time, its very easy to see and it stands out whilst being very short and sweet.
